This Train

“This Train” is an old folk song recorded by Sister Rosetta Tharpe in 1939. I couldn’t tell you how I learned this song, I know I must have heard it on some old-timey radio show years ago  and it just stuck with me.  I can tell you that for years I sang it alone in my car over and over.   Somewhere along the way it morphed into a version that’s pretty far removed from Sister Rosetta’s version, for better or for worse.

Several months ago a band called The Black River Kings asked me to come and sing a few songs with them.  Since they have sort of an antique-y country sound, this is one of the songs I suggested

Here is a live recording of our version of the song, not perfect, admittedly, but you can hear a real honest-to-God exuberance here that I’m proud of.

Here, incidentally, is the other cover I chose:  “Clap Hands”, a Tom Waits song from 1985.  This was another song I sang compulsively in my car for years.
